Skilled hands, captured in a video library

The know-how that highly skilled technicians across the plants have built up through years of hands-on work is hard to capture in documents alone. H-Library is Hyundai Motor Company’s skills-transfer program that records this know-how on video and passes it on to the next generation of technicians. From May 2021 to December 2024, LABVAMOS produced 207 videos in total in two formats: lecture and demonstration.

Lecture type — the expert and the lecture screen in one frame

Lecture-type videos use PIP (picture-in-picture) to show the featured expert and the lecture materials at the same time. The expert’s writing and markings on a tablet PC were recorded in real time, making each one an interactive lecture that tracks the expert’s hand through each explanation.

Demonstration type — real equipment, 4 to 8 cameras

Demonstration-type videos were shot in front of actual production equipment, using 4 to 8 cameras to capture the expert at work. Separate views from above and in front of the equipment and from the worker’s point of view were edited with split screens and process captions, so viewers can follow the work sequence and hand movements without being on the floor.

A grasp of the factory floor, built over 207 videos

Over 4 years, LABVAMOS covered a wide range of manufacturing processes — from paint pretreatment and manual equipment operation and inspection to wheel replacement and panel quality inspection. Along the way, it built production know-how rooted in the terminology and workflow of the factory floor. Knowing which angle conveys a skill properly, and what to show and what to keep hidden, is the biggest asset this project left behind.

LABVAMOS handled full production, overseeing the filming and editing of 207 videos over 4 years. Some scene photos have been blurred for security.
